Wampum Bead Strand

Created by Steve Wheeler, Board Member of Abenaki Health and Heritage, Missisquoi Abenaki

This wampum bead strand (tubular and disc) was made by Steve Wheeler.  Joanne Crawford, former Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi chief asked Steve to create this string as a gift to be presented to the then Department of Interior Secretary, Debra Haaland.  Secretary Haaland visited the Missisquoi Refuge while visiting Vermont in 2023.  It was an honor to be asked to create this traditional gift that was presented to the secretary on that day.
